Wimbledon Adopts Video Review System This Season.

The Championships tennis court with replay system

The tournament joins the American and Australian Opens in implementing video review systems.

Replay technology will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors will gain the option to challenge certain rulings from the chair umpire, echoing the protocol already in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology will be operational on Centre Court and Court One throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development comes just a season following the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the umpire to re-examine other situations, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or body during play.
  • Potential interference end of a point.

Notably, there is an unlimited number on the amount of challenges a competitor can ask for.

A Recent Example

An illustrative case took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the review system against his opponent.

The British player admitted it was a tough call for the official, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a video and determined Draper was responsible for hindrance, awarding the rally to Medvedev.

Wider Implementation

This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have the system implemented at every one of its events.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the introduction of visual indicators on displays to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This solves instances where the crowd have occasionally been unsure if a ball was out or in.

Finally, with precisely a century of days to go until the beginning of the Championships, the AELTC have further announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
