Jair Bolsonaro has been arrested after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under house arrest.

The former head of state was sentenced of planning a military coup in last fall and given more than 27 years in prison, but he continued under home detention pending appeals.

Brazilian Supreme Court Justice the presiding justice said the decision to arrest the septuagenarian politician was a safety action after "new facts" emerged.

This involved seeking to disable his tracking device and a call for a supporters' gathering that could enable a potential flight.

In a paperwork permitting the custody, the judge said information from the facility tracking the former president's confinement suggested the one-time head of state's "intention to break the tracking monitor to guarantee victory in his escape.
