RAF Typhoon jets have conducted a mission with France's air force in a coordinated attack against an underground arms cache in Syria operated by the Islamic State group (IS), according to the UK's MoD.

The facility, identified by surveillance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the release indicated, and was located in hills just above the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our fighter planes utilized laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a number of entry passages leading to the site... preliminary assessments suggest the target was engaged successfully," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian casualties in the attack late on Saturday and all the aircraft made a safe return, the MoD added.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - also known as the so-called Islamic State - imposed militant control over parts of Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.

"This operation shows our UK leadership, and commitment to stand shoulder to shoulder with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the area," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of IS after its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank all the members of the UK armed forces participating in this mission for their skill and their valour," Healey added. "They were among thousands of British personnel on duty over the holidays. This operation, to take out terrorist threats who threaten our safety, highlights how our armed forces are always on standby, continuously, protecting the UK within its borders and powerful internationally."

During December, the United States armed forces conducted what it called a "massive strike" targeting Daesh sites in Syria, after an ambush claimed the lives of two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN says Daesh still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in Syria and Iraq.
